DECEMBER en Plein Air

ALOHA DECEMBER, ALOHA ARTISTS! and a ho ho ho to you (insert bearded smiley face here).....well, here we are- the last month of the year, and teetering on the cusp of a new year- So Very Cool. Every day is paint day, but the purpose of this schedule is a planned group session for each Thursday of each month. We've been going strong for 4 years now! I, personally, have learned a real lot. This is Whale Season, a time of year that we can bear witness to a bit of their annual visit. As you stand before your easels take a moment to reflect upon the ever-present sea, and it's denizens. You could see a whale spouting, breaching or being simply joyful in the not too far distance. No matter how many times I've see them, it is always exciting & awesome.

DECEMBER SCHEDULE/en Plein Aire-

1-WAI'ULI/Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave- almost to Richardson's beach, makai side. Gorgeous! loads of views, lots of locations.. don't be locked to the pavilions, check out the entire area.

15-PEPE'EKEO/Low Store/Scenic Route- a little store at the Hamakua side of the Scenic Route, lots of parking, sweeping views, no facilities.
23-WAI'AKEA FISHING AREA/Kilauea Ave, Hilo/ behind the "Just Cruisin" shop, or drop into the lower parking area by the purple building. River views, park green ways, ducks & whatnot. No Facilities, but can use the coffee shop.

NOVEMBER/en Plein Aire

Aloha Artists! Aloha November!
There's a great schedule planned for Nov., & that includes the annual Thanksgiving Thursday Painting Session at downtown Hilo. Usually we paint somewhere close to the bottom of Haili St., situating ourselves along in the parking lot or something. Last year we painted on the sidewalks along front street. However this year we are stationing ourselves in front of One Gallery. The periwinkle exterior is screaming to be on canvas.. besides it's a very hip co-op artists gallery (if I do say so myself).. Downtown Hilo is really cool on Thanksgiving Day. Hilo's streets are relatively devoid of cars, and discerning artist's will enjoy scoping the streets, the buildings, sidewalks, shadows, trees and all with out all the distractions of everyday. Not your usual experience for sure. Come by for a bit & check it out, paint! Also up this November is the PAPOH annual paint out, which is being held on the other side of the island, Kona & Waikoloa. In anticipation of this event, Leslie has scheduled one of our sessions at Anaeho'omalu Bay (aka "A BAY") Waikoloa. The PAPOH painters will be there in full force, if you've never attended one of these events in the past years, you should make an effort to spin over at least for this Thursday session. It only takes 1 1/2 hr. to get there, not really THAT bad...... grab a friend & have a fun time.... c u there!

SCHEDULE/NOVEMBER-

3)- WAI'ULI-Keaukaha, Hilo- Kalaniana'ole Ave to just before Richardson's Beach park. Lg. parking area, water, facilities. Forever views, gorgeous colors, pavilions & tidepools.

(where the Kings Shops are located) You'll see a huge sign on the makai side of HWY 19 that reads; "Anaehoomalu Bay".. turn makai onto Waikoloa Beach Drive. At the third stop sign, turn left. You'll come to a parking area with a nearby drive way & drop off zone. Park in the lot there.Walk towards the beach & meet at the bathroom area, Darryl Hill demo to begin at 9:30. Thursday is The "kick off" for the annual PAPOH paint out. Be there or be square.. :) Any location questions- contact Lori Hight at (303) 241-5739/Read more in the OTHER MUSINGS section of this blog.

24)-HAILI St.-downtown HIlo- In front of One Gallery, corner of Mamo & Kilauea ave. or at the bottom of Haili st. it's your choice. Watch for random hard core artists who aren't all that swayed by a holiday involving cooking & eating. A fun day of unexpected happenings. Facilities avail.

Aloha Artists, Aloha October!
I deeply apologize for posting so late! I've been down for the count! A bug took hold of me & would not let go, it infiltrated my lungs, & all of my breathing stuffs, it's been rough, but I'm fighting my way back to normalcy (whatever that is). Things are looking up.
It is good to breathe again, a luxury for sure. Great gratitude for the ability to breathe in the fabulous trades, yes! SEPTEMBER/ en Plein Aire

Aloha Artists, aloha September! Finally school is back in session, and so the beach parks are less populated & much quieter, which is always a good thing for a painting session. This month we'll be frequenting some of our favorite haunts. I often find returning to a spot a great opportunity to address unfinished paintings from previous sessions. I like the chance finish them on location, seems to be better than referencing a photograph. JULY/en plein aire

ALOHA JULY, ALOHA ARTISTS!
Many folks expect less rain in July, however, tradition is trade-wind weather for July, and trades do not always translate to hot languid days. Expect morning & evening showers, sunny days & shifting weather patterns. I truly love trade-wind weather, the night rains, the out standing clouds, the winds, & the bonus of no vog! Leslie has scheduled some fine locations this month- off our familiar track of seaside parks. It's refreshing to steal away from the beach-loving-summer-break crowds, and enjoy some quiet reflective "brush in hand" moments up country. I am hoping to see you at one of these Thursday events..

JULY SCHEDULE-
7)WAI'ULI BEACH PARK- Keaukaha. From Hilo, Kalaniana'ole Ave to Wai'uli Beach park (just before Richardson's). 5 round pavilions in a row, lg. parking lot, facilities, & fresh water. Fantastic views, endless sky, waves, sea creatures, surfers, tide pools of magical colors, and little beach cottages line the roadway.
14)SADDLE ROAD-Pu'u Huluhulu, from Hilo, just past the 26mm, just prior to the Mauna Loa Access Rd., a left turn (towards M. Loa), up the little road there's a few turn off scenic spots where it's conducive to artists pulling over for a little painting session. Cell phones mostly work, so you can call L.Sears for a navigational tip if you need- (310)245.6411/ keep in mind that S. Rd. can be chilly & windy, so bring along stuff to keep you warm & to anchor your easel.
21)MOKU OLA (COCONUT ISLAND)-Hilo, a small island makai of Hilo Hawaiian Hotel & right next to Liliuokalani Park. Spectacular views from the parking lot, & also from the island itself. Foot bridge to island is paved if you bring a rolling thingy for your supplies, restrooms & fresh water avail.
28)LAUPAHOEHOE POINT- Lauapahoehoe, Hamakua district- From Hilo, Hamakua Hwy (19) to the 2nd gulch, follow makai signs down to Laupahoehoe point. As the road curves it's way downhill, you'll want to pull over & paint already, but it's a steep & narrow road, so keep your shirt on, the Beach Park at the bottom is well worth the patience. Breath taking dramatic coast line both ways, interesting shore line lava features, & up valley views. Laupahoehoe is everything that your familiar with, & like nothing you've ever seen before. Water & facilities avail.

JUNE/EN PLEIN AIRE

Aloha Artists, Aloha June!
Well, the days
are longer, & school is out, but I want to avoid using the term "summer". Here in the Mid-Pacific we instead have what's known as Wet Season & Dry Season..
Right now it is still Wet Season.
Longer days grant us extended painting days, a great opportunity
for all kinds of situations.
As a group we'll try and avoid the crowded beaches & tuck into roads less traveled. A shout out to Leslie for creating our location schedule! This month I Included some pix of our day in Onomea, at Gallery Toulouce. The horse is a NEIGHbor.. :)

JUNE SCHEDULE-no fees, we generally do an all day session, but show up when it works for you, & be a self starter.

2- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK-
(AKA LELEIWI) KEAUKAHA, Kalaniana'ole Rd. to WAI'ULI.
Just before Richardson's, 5 pavilions in a row,
parking, lua, fresh water, facilities. Amazing views, impressive shoreline has kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.

9-SUISAN OLD PEOPLES PARK/Hilo- Directly behind Suisan Fish Market, large old monkeypod tree. Views of Hilo Bay, the "Isles", the small boat harbor, quiet and sweet. No facilities.
16-KAMA'ILI
- Red Road/lower Puna-From the Pahoa-Kalapana hwy., drop down to the coast on Kama'ili Road (Opihikao), & follow to the bottom. The bottom coast road is fondly called "The Red Road" because it used to be made of crushed red cinder. Turn left towards Kapoho, 1/4 mile down, makai side, is a turn off. We paint just beyond, where the trees are thick & the cliff sides are generous. Look for the painters along the shoreline. No Facilities. We're planning to hang out at Michael's afterward, at his newly completed hut. Bring a pot luck dish.
22-REED'S BAY-
Hilo,Banyan Drive- At the Keaukaha side, views of little boats moored, ocean cottages, fisher-people. No facilities, no water.
30-LEHI
A/King's Landing/Pu'umaile-Keaukaha-Another ocean side location, & less tame than the others. Kalaniana'ole Rd. to the very end, pass through the yellow gates,
(for sure open), heading towards the end, always remain on the road that is closest to the sea. Artist's will be tucked into the trees, or maybe along one of the pathways that lead away from the parking areas. Sometimes guys show up & blast their boom boxes, chattering & laughing on & on, if this is the case, I'll for sure be up one of the ocean side pathways, away from the torment.

May Schedule/ en plein air/ Waipio Day pix

MAY/en plein aire-
Aloha May, Aloha Artists!

May is an unusually lovely time of year in Hilo. It begins with Lei Day (May 1st), while the energy of Merrie Monarch week still lingers fresh in our memories. The liveliness of Hula afficiano, halau members, Kumu, Kapuna, musicians, magnificent flowers & foliage, horses, and crafters create this special week of aloha. The normally mellow east side of Hawai'i is significantly charged for weeks afterward. Our group painted at Waipi'o in April, a few pics are included here. It was a gorgeous day, ending with a small kine pa'ina riverside.

MAY SCHEDULE-

5 - WAI'ULI BEACH PARK (AKA Leleiwi),
Keaukaha. Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, located just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, lua, fresh water. Amazing views, and impressive shoreline have kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.

12- TOULOUCE GALLERY - Papaikou/Onomea Scenic Drive- Diane Renchler Gallery Toulouce is located on sweeping gorgeous land, with ocean views, majestic trees of mango & avo's, sweet gardens, vintage plantation buildings, and of coarse the Gallery. A great place to spend the day! Multiple views. Water, & facilities. "Onomea Scenic Route" approx. 2 miles from the hwy. makai side, yellow building. Mahalo nui loa, Diane & Toulouce! p.s. – please park to the back to leave room for Gallery customers.. parking on grass is okay.

19- 'BABY BEACH', Keaukaha – Kalaniana'ole Ave to Onekahakaha rd, (makai side). Left onto Apapane Rd., right onto Lihikai. All the way to the end, pass through the gates to pkg. area. A wonderful, protected beach with lagoon, shady trees, lava flow tide pools, pounding surf, and Mauna Kea across the bay. A tranquil, lovely spot for us! No facilities, no water.

26- AKAKA FALLS – Above Honomu Town. Take Hwy 19 to Honomu, turn up, at the junction turn left into town. At the edge of town take the mauka rd., up approx. 4 miles up to the AKAKA FALLS park. The 400 ft falls may be crowded with tourists, but the road itself offers great, sweeping vistas of old cane land, and the park offers quiet paths, streams, lush greenery. Good parking, water, & restrooms.

April en Plein Aire Schedule

APRIL/en plein aire
Aloha Artists, Aloha April! This month welcomes the annual spectacular Merrie Monarch Festival. Known world wide as The premier
hula & chant (oli) competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival is a fantastic celebration of Hawaiian culture, history, & language. Sweet mellow little Hilo town fills with festival fans, all dressed in their finest Aloha threads. On April 30th the Merrie Monarch Parade will march through downtown Hilo. Flower bedecked horses & magnificent Pa'u Riders representing each of the seven islands will prance and dance down the roads thrilling all. I want to accentuate the photo op aspect of this wonderfully inspiring & fresh annual event. April's schedule was developed by Leslie Sears.

THE SCHEDULE:

7) WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, located just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, lua, fresh water. Amazing views, and impressive shoreline have kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.

14) THE ISLES-
Hilo, Liliuokalani Park area/Another favorite location.. wonderful views of Hilo Bay, long views of Hilo town, and the luscious back drop of full color Mauna Kea. Turn makai, from Kamehameha Hwy onto Lihiwai Rd., towards Suisan. Just beyond Nihon restaurant, turn left into the parking lot just past the restaurant. We'll be near the water, bayfront side. Water available, portable lua only.

21) WAIPIO VALLEY
- Kukuihaele-Honokaa- We meet at the top side lookout, & maybe do a painting or hook up with a friend with that four wheeling feeling & head down the valley. Always a luscious day.

27)
WAILOA PARK –Hilo/Bayfront Park- We'll meet in the vicinity of the Wailoa Art Gallery in honor of Merrie Monarch Week. With visitors all over Hilo, we annually paint in & around Wailoa park, just to add to the strong creative forces in the air. Curvey bridges, expansive lawns, shade trees and peaceful waters all provide a meditative environment. From Pau'ahi street, turn onto Piopio St. Follow along to the Wailoa Art Center. We will be dotting the lawn & probably under the trees, except for Bob who paints in the bright sunlight.

MARCH En PLEIN AIR SCHEDULE

Aloha Artists! E komo mai March!
Lovely sweet March has 5 Thursdays, & 5 great locations. We meet every Thursday morning, sometimes painters arrive as early as sunrise, sometimes not until mid or later day, it depends on weather, & whim. Often times a typical plein air day stretches into the lavender hour, with artists at easel as the last bit of light shimmers into the horizon. Never feel bad about not getting out as early as you intended. Plein Air Thursdays are thoroughly savored for every last bit of light.. Please Note: The last location has been swapped out, Waipio for Laupahoehoe. We will pick up the Waipio session at another date..
3) WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, located just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, lua, fresh water. Amazing views, and impressive shoreline have kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.
10) SADDLE ROAD, Girl Scout Camp/43.5 mm- From Hilo, Saddle Rd. to 43.5 mile marker, G.S. Camp is on the left, marked by a small grove of trees, meet in the parking area. No lua, no water, & cool weather conditions, expect strong winds. We usually move locations once up there, so it's best to meet with the group at the set location & time. We'll be moving towards Waiki'i Ranch, where verdant green hills bursting with gorgeous sunny yellow daisys are backed by startling cerulean blue skies, it's amazing. Spotty cell service.
17)KUHIO BAY/'RADIO BAY', Keaukaha, Hilo- Where the Hilo Bay breakwater begins. Sweet little boats, the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, & sometimes the Hokulea dock here. Kalaniana'ole Ave. to the Shoreline Access (makai side), (the first left after the Hilo Harbor entrance). An easily traveled but unpaved road. We're usually tucked along the shore.
24)ALA HEIAU- Hawaiian Paradise Park, Maku'u Point, Puna- Maku'u Rd. to the bottom, right turn onto Ala Heiau Rd, drive to the end/parking area. Vistas to thrill, and since it's whale season, it will surely be a wonderful day. Great sunrise. No facilities, no fresh water.
31) LAUPAHOEHOE BEACH PARK, "The Point"/ (sorry! Waipio Valley is off for now)- From Hilo, Hamakua Hwy to the 27 mile marker, just past the 2nd gulch. On the makai side, take the Lapahoehoe Point turn off. Follow down to the Beach Park, we'll be dotted along the shorelines, perched on windy cliffs or nested under a tree. Facilities available.

FEBRUARY EN PLEIN AIRE SCHEDULE

FEBRUARY SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE

3 - WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Hilo – (formerly Leleiwi). Our standing location for first Thursdays for its beauty and easy access. There are lots of different views from Wai'uli; tide pools with beautiful colors, sea grass, and sometimes turtles, Nenes AND WHALES! It is always a pleasure to paint here. On Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha. Drive the beach road until you come to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. There are 2 parking areas and sets of pavilions, we usually set up in pavilions near the lifeguard stand. But sometimes we set up at the first pavilions or in between, just to mix it up. Lots of parking and restrooms.

10- Cherry Blossoms in WAIMEA We don’t normally venture this far a field, but then, cherry blossoms aren’t normally blooming in Hawaii. We’ll be there a few days after the festival, so let’s hope for a great display of color! Look for us on Church Road, across from the Waimea Civic Center. Taking the Mamalahoa Hwy from Honoka'a, Church Road is on the right before the intersection with Lindsey/Kawaihae. Dress warmly.

17 BABY BEACH/BROWN'S – A Hilo beach park that’s off the beaten path... Head down Kalaniana'ole Ave turn left on Onekahakaha Rd. Make a quick left onto Apapane Rd, then right on Lihikai Rd. At the end of the road park and walk down to a lovely, protected beach with swimming, trees, lava framed pools and Mauna Kea across the bay. A lovely new spot for us! No facilities – walk to Onekahakaha for restrooms.

24- PEPE'EKEO HOMESTEAD- Private property with sweeping views to the ocean over vibrantly green undulating pastures, with stream, massive mango trees, bamboo, banana trees, and a red barn roof in below property for spot of color. Hosts Cary & Susan are admirers of artists, & thought it'd be charming to host us for a day. Bring your own water. From Hilo: Hamakua Hwy to Pepe'ekeo, turn makai (right) at Sugar Mill Road (where the old giant Cog sits). Drive down just a short distance. At the first intersection bear left, but don’t proceed, because the entry gate is on your immediate left too! The gate will be open for the day, drive thru and take the long shady winding road down, it curves right, look for the new steel barn-- it has an accordion-looking roof. This is the place. Please don't block the drive or run over the little solar lights they have along the driveway. Stay within the property. Call Amy if you're turned around -- 989-6906.
