March Schedule/en plein air

MARCH SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE/still every Thursday/8am (or so)/free

4- Wai'uli Beach Park, Hilo – (formerly Leleiwi). Our standing location every first Thursday- for its beauty & easy access. There's plenty different views from Wai'uli; tide pools with beautiful colors, sea grass, and the occasional turtle, Nene, whale. It's always a pleasurable experience to paint here. Informal midday critique, feel free bring work in progress or current work for gentle feedback. Take Kalaniana'ole Ave. through Keaukaha curving along the beach road 'til you come to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. Plenty parking, 5 pavilions, lifeguard stand on the point. Restrooms.
11- Ala Heiau – An absolute favorite spot, sheltered cliff-side at the bottom of Maku'u Rd in Paradise Park. Follow Maku'u Rd to the very bottom, right on Ala Heiau Rd. Drive to the end & park (leave access for fishermen’s trucks). Fabulous vistas of coast, tidepools, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully shaded cliffs. No Restrooms.
18- Kama'ili/Opihikao - From the Pahoa-Kalapana Hwy. turn left (makai) at Kama'ili Rd (Opihikao). Follow to the bottom (approx. 4 miles.) & turn left onto Red Road. Drive about 1/4 mile & you'll see a by-pass area (paintable) or immediately past that tree shaded sea cliffs. Loads of shade, and awesome ocean action. Great ocean cliffs, coconut, ironwood, kamani trees. The infamous red road curves by, accentuated by ancient massive mango trees, and wonderful wandering footpaths dappled with Renoir-like sunlight. What a place.
25- Akaka Falls- From Hilo, Hamakua Hwy to Honomu town, turn up, follow road.. turn left at the top of the road, drive through town, make a right (mauka) at the Akaka Falls signs, take that road approx. 4 miles up to the Akaka Falls park. The 400 ft falls may be sparse from lack of rain, but the road itself offers great, sweeping vistas of town, old cane land, ocean, endless sky. The park has quiet pathways, little streams, lush greenery, parking & restrooms.

In Remembrance~ Wayne Miyamoto
On February 20, 2010, artist Wayne Miyamoto suddenly passed away. The UH Hilo Professor of Art, and Dep't. Chair, will be deeply missed by not only UH Hilo, but also throughout the Hawai'i art community. As an acquisition committee contributor for The State Foundation on Culture & Arts, Wayne was instrumental in the annual purchase of art works by many Hawai'i island artists. Also a prolific artist himself, he worked across media, and in all forms of printmaking. His work was highly decorated & earned numerous prestigious awards world wide. In addition to his personal successes, Wayne remained true to the Hawai'i art community and encouraged the career paths of many developing artists. His contributions to the art world, through inspiration, talent, and sheer energy will live on for many generations to come. Me ke aloha pumehana, Wayne, a hui hou.
