December Schedule/en plein aire

Hello Plein Air artists – below is the schedule for December. A note please: during our last few paint sessions I heard from several painters that their paint outings would be more enjoyable if there was less chatting. As one guilty of chatting, I would like to ask us all to be aware that not all artists like to talk (or listen to others talk) as they create, so let’s keep it down. But if you want to chat with me, I can do coffee anytime :)

Plein Air Artists of Hawaii Island (that’s us, aka PAAOHI) meets informally each Thursday morning approx. 8am – noon, but come when you can, some artists stay all day. PAAOHI has no fees, structure, instruction or rules other than that to hang out with us you need to be creating art. It's a real treat when new artists join our group, or when artists we haven't seen for awhile reappear. So if you know anyone who'd like to participate, invite them show up any Thursday, pass their email on to me and I will send them our schedule, or direct them to view the schedule on our BLOG http://www.paaohi.blogspot.com/.

The "Other Musings" section at the lower part of this email is a bulletin-board style networking source; a forum for readers to learn about upcoming shows, workshops, island wide plein air groups, etc. I'll post art-related items submitted to me via email prior to the 25th of the month.

ALOHA DECEMBER!!!! The winter Holidays are here along with clear fresh, rain washed colors. It’s also a busy time, so our Thursday paint trips can be a welcome step away from the hustle and bustle. I’ve scheduled a day up on top of the saddle for those who like to see snow and feel a little chill for Christmas, and kept the rest of the locations close to town.

DECEMBER SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE
3- WAI'ULI- Wai'uli Beach Park, Hilo – (formerly Leleiwi). Our standing location for first Thursdays for its beauty and easy access. There are lots of different views from Wai'uli; tide pools with beautiful colors, sea grass, and the occasional turtle or flock of Nene. It is always a pleasure to paint here. We gather for an informal midday critique, so bring old or current work if you’d like feedback. On Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha. Drive the beach road until you come to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. There are 2 parking areas and sets of pavilions, we usually set up in pavilions near the lifeguard stand. Lots of parking and restrooms.

10- Ala Heiau - A favorite destination on the water at the bottom of Maku'u Rd in Paradise Park. This spot offers fabulous vistas of rugged coast, colorful tidepools, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully sheltered spot under the ironwoods. Follow Maku'u to the ocean. At Ala Heiau Rd, turn right. Drive to the end & park (leave access for the fishermen’s trucks). No facilities.

17- Pu’u Huluhulu on Saddle Road – Maybe there will be snow on the mountains, there will certainly be crisp, brisk air and sweeping views. Head up the Saddle road to Pu’u Huluhlu, just past the 26 mile marker turn left onto the Mauna Loa access road (it’s immediately before the Mauna Kea access road). In the first half mile there are 3 pull outs on the left side of the road, which will provide ample parking for our gang. View from these pull outs are of Pu’u Huluhulu with a backdrop of Mauna Kea one way and Mauna Loa the other. The saddle itself provides constantly changing light and atmosphere, a nice change of pace from our sea level haunts. Artists with light weight set ups may want to climb the pu’u for an even more stunning panorama. IT’S COLD AT 6000’ so bundle up! “Facilities” are an outhouse in the Pu’u Huluhlu reserve.

24- Hilo Bay at the Bayfront Beach Park canoe stands - Keeping it local for Christmas Eve. Paint a little then head off to the Bayfront stores for your last minute shopping. This spot has easy access, lots of parking, and beautiful views of Hilo town, the bay, and Mauna Kea, plus splashes of hot color from the canoes. From Kamehameha Avenue, enter the beach parking lot between Manono & Pauahi. Head for the canoes on the sand...

31- Wailoa Park – Another sweet in-town location for new Years Eve. Wailoa’s graceful curved bridges, expansive lawns, trees and peaceful waters provide a meditative spot to ease us into 2010. Plus there’s plenty of coverage from the pavilions in case of showers. From Manono Street drive into the park on Piilani. Head to the right in the parking lot (toward Bayfront) and meet in the area of the large pavilion, or on the lawns, or wherever the view speaks to you. Easy access, parking, good restrooms, ducks, the occasional flasher... Hilo.
