When I was a just a crayon artist, I saw a postcard of a car driving underneath an enormous redwood tree. It blew my little mind. This month I'll be traveling along the northern
coast of California, spending time in the presence of those colossal beauties. I'll write about it in the October blog. OH! I created a blog! It was so easy a chimp could do it! In the early hours of Thursday, August 14th our dear friend and fellow artist, Anne Whitmore passed away. That day's plein air session was serendipitously scheduled for her much loved Puna coastline, an unexpected tribute to a talented artist. The Arthur Johnsen Gallery is hosting a First Friday event on Sept. 5th from 5-7 pm, celebrating Anne and her beautiful paintings. Her work will be available for purchase to help offset her remaining bills. Anne's talent, love of art, and her easy bright smile will be truly missed. A hui hou Anne. 4-Wai'uli Beach Park- at Keaukaha, makai side, just before Richardson's. It is distinguished by 5 round pavilions in a row, and an orange lifeguard tower on the point. Last month we ventured over to the little island just past the public lua. Completely new views, and it was only just across the pond. Exquisite.
11-"the isles"- in Hilo, behind Nihon Restaurant near Liliuokalani Park. Views across the bay, Mauna Kea, the Hilo Bay canoe landing and halau, backside of Suisan, Coconut Island.
Vignettes of shoreline fishermen, boats going in & out, planes over head, families cooking out, just Hilo life. Portable lua, plenty parking.
18- Kalapana Paradise Drive In- Kaimu (no longer Verna's Drive-In) From Pahoa by-pass (hwy 130) at the intersection just below Pahoa town, proceed straight on hwy 130 (towards Kalapana). At the approx. the 21 mile marker you'll note a makai turn off to Kaimu/Kalapana. Turn left there, drive to the bottom of that road, turn right (sign says food& rest stop). Drive to the end of the road and find a parking slot. This location has a few options. Walk out on the flow to get up close and personal with Waikupanaha vent.. or out to the beautiful black sand beach. Maybe just stay in the shady parking area & paint the fruit stand, or the sweet little houses that are tucked under wonderful old mango trees. A last remaining slice of old style Kaimu. If you choose to paint on the flow, remember to weight your easel, it's windy out there. I once witnessed an unfortunate flying easel disaster.
25-Green Lake- At Kapoho/lower Puna. From Hilo- hwy.11 to hwy.130. By pass Pahoa, turn left at 4-way intersection just below Pahoa town onto hwy. 132. Travel makai, through the tree tunnel, bending left towards Kapoho (still 132). You'll come to another 4-way-stop (aka "four corners"), turn right onto hwy137. Go to the first gate on the mauka side of the road. The gate should be open, we'll be meeting there at 8am. We'll venture into the interior after everyone arrives. The infamous green lake (located inside an ancient crater) is easily accessed. The fresh-water lake is emerald green & is rumored to be bottomless. Within the 200 plus acres, there's 4 huge craters, covered by native trees, giant monkeypods, bananas, exotics, and pasture land. The side of the crater has been cleared so it's possible to paint overlooking the lake, and there's also lakeside spots. Bring repellant, the mosquitos even impressed me. The monkeypods are excellent subject, and at the top of the tallest crater the views are spectacular. But, it's hot up there (no trees), best in early morn or the lavender dusk.
