Artist Swap Meet

Prague, Charles Bridge, Early Morn

FEBURARY SCHEDULE

Hello Plein Air artists!
Plein Air Artists of Hawaii Island (that’s us, aka PAAOHI) meets informally each Thursday morning approx. 8am – noon, but come when you can, some artists stay all day. PAAOHI has no fees, structure, instruction or rules other than that to hang out with us you need to be creating art (and keep chatter away from the non-chatters. They’ll tell you who they are). It's a real treat when new artists join our group, or when artists we haven't seen for awhile reappear. So if you know anyone who'd like to participate, invite them show up any Thursday, pass their email on to me and I will send them our schedule, or direct them to view the schedule on our BLOG http://www.paaohi.blogspot.com/.
The "Other Musings" section at the lower part of this email is a bulletin-board style networking source; a forum for readers to learn about upcoming shows, workshops, island wide plein air groups, etc. I'll post art-related items submitted to me via email prior to the 25th of the month.

FEBRUARY SCHEDULE~

4- Wai'uli Beach Park, Hilo – (formerly Leleiwi). Our standing location for first Thursdays for its beauty and easy access. There are lots of different views from Wai'uli; tide pools with beautiful colors, sea grass, and the occasional turtle, Nene or whale. It is always a pleasure to paint here. We gather for an informal midday critique, so bring old or current work if you’d like feedback. On Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha. Drive the beach road until you come to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. There are 2 parking areas and sets of pavilions, we usually set up in pavilions near the lifeguard stand. But sometimes we set up at the first pavilions or in between, just to mix it up. Lots of parking and restrooms.

11- Cherry Blossoms in Waimea! We don’t normally venture this far a field, but then, cherry blossoms aren’t normally blooming in Hawaii. We’ll be there a few days after the festival, so let’s hope for a great display of color! Look for us on Church Road, across from the Waimea Civic Center. Taking the Mamalahoa Hwy from Honoka'a, Church Road is on the left before the intersection with Lindsey/Kawaihae. Dress warmly.

18- Carlsmith Beach Park, aka 4 Mile, Hilo. A beautiful park with lawns, swimming, big trees, magic ponds, and life guard tower. Take Kalainana’ole Rd. in Keaukaha to Carlsmith Beach Park, right across the street from the Seaside Restaurant & lagoon. Has bathrooms, parking.

25- Laupahoehoe Point. Dramatic, rugged cliffs and pounding surf. This incredibly beautiful place was also the setting of tragedy, the 1946 tsunami washed away a school and claimed 24 lives. A lovely park now sits near the school site, with grass, pavilions, restrooms and parking. It’s often windy and it’s ALWAYS gorgeous. From the Mamalahoa Hwy, turn makai on Laupahoehoe Point Road (just past the 27 mile marker). Enjoy the views on the way down to the ocean.

see attached photo is of a painting done by Rod in Prague. Margaret writes:
This is an early morning painting on the famous Charles Bridge in Prague, by Rod Cameron, and he offers this insight into the color temperature that he used.
"The magical light of Prague at this time had a cool predominate cast which brings the shadows to the warmer hues of the palate. Cool light equals warm shadows or warm light gives cool shadows is the general rule. The incredible buildings of the city create an interesting sky line across the horizon and I used the tall statue on the left which had a natural gaze into the scene and the focal points of the painting."
Experienced plein air painting artists in Hawaii join Rod Cameron in Prague this spring.
