April en Plein Aire Schedule

APRIL/en plein aire
Aloha Artists, Aloha April! This month welcomes the annual spectacular Merrie Monarch Festival. Known world wide as The premier
hula & chant (oli) competition, the Merrie Monarch Festival is a fantastic celebration of Hawaiian culture, history, & language. Sweet mellow little Hilo town fills with festival fans, all dressed in their finest Aloha threads. On April 30th the Merrie Monarch Parade will march through downtown Hilo. Flower bedecked horses & magnificent Pa'u Riders representing each of the seven islands will prance and dance down the roads thrilling all. I want to accentuate the photo op aspect of this wonderfully inspiring & fresh annual event. April's schedule was developed by Leslie Sears.

THE SCHEDULE:

7) WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, located just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, lua, fresh water. Amazing views, and impressive shoreline have kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.

14) THE ISLES-
Hilo, Liliuokalani Park area/Another favorite location.. wonderful views of Hilo Bay, long views of Hilo town, and the luscious back drop of full color Mauna Kea. Turn makai, from Kamehameha Hwy onto Lihiwai Rd., towards Suisan. Just beyond Nihon restaurant, turn left into the parking lot just past the restaurant. We'll be near the water, bayfront side. Water available, portable lua only.

21) WAIPIO VALLEY
- Kukuihaele-Honokaa- We meet at the top side lookout, & maybe do a painting or hook up with a friend with that four wheeling feeling & head down the valley. Always a luscious day.

27)
WAILOA PARK –Hilo/Bayfront Park- We'll meet in the vicinity of the Wailoa Art Gallery in honor of Merrie Monarch Week. With visitors all over Hilo, we annually paint in & around Wailoa park, just to add to the strong creative forces in the air. Curvey bridges, expansive lawns, shade trees and peaceful waters all provide a meditative environment. From Pau'ahi street, turn onto Piopio St. Follow along to the Wailoa Art Center. We will be dotting the lawn & probably under the trees, except for Bob who paints in the bright sunlight.
Sunscreen please! Water & restrooms available.

MARCH En PLEIN AIR SCHEDULE

Aloha Artists! E komo mai March!
Lovely sweet March has 5 Thursdays, & 5 great locations. We meet every Thursday morning, sometimes painters arrive as early as sunrise, sometimes not until mid or later day, it depends on weather, & whim. Often times a typical plein air day stretches into the lavender hour, with artists at easel as the last bit of light shimmers into the horizon. Never feel bad about not getting out as early as you intended. Plein Air Thursdays are thoroughly savored for every last bit of light.. Please Note: The last location has been swapped out, Waipio for Laupahoehoe. We will pick up the Waipio session at another date..
3) WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, located just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, lua, fresh water. Amazing views, and impressive shoreline have kept us returning monthly for 4 years now.
10) SADDLE ROAD, Girl Scout Camp/43.5 mm- From Hilo, Saddle Rd. to 43.5 mile marker, G.S. Camp is on the left, marked by a small grove of trees, meet in the parking area. No lua, no water, & cool weather conditions, expect strong winds. We usually move locations once up there, so it's best to meet with the group at the set location & time. We'll be moving towards Waiki'i Ranch, where verdant green hills bursting with gorgeous sunny yellow daisys are backed by startling cerulean blue skies, it's amazing. Spotty cell service.
17)KUHIO BAY/'RADIO BAY', Keaukaha, Hilo- Where the Hilo Bay breakwater begins. Sweet little boats, the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, & sometimes the Hokulea dock here. Kalaniana'ole Ave. to the Shoreline Access (makai side), (the first left after the Hilo Harbor entrance). An easily traveled but unpaved road. We're usually tucked along the shore.
24)ALA HEIAU- Hawaiian Paradise Park, Maku'u Point, Puna- Maku'u Rd. to the bottom, right turn onto Ala Heiau Rd, drive to the end/parking area. Vistas to thrill, and since it's whale season, it will surely be a wonderful day. Great sunrise. No facilities, no fresh water.
31) LAUPAHOEHOE BEACH PARK, "The Point"/ (sorry! Waipio Valley is off for now)- From Hilo, Hamakua Hwy to the 27 mile marker, just past the 2nd gulch. On the makai side, take the Lapahoehoe Point turn off. Follow down to the Beach Park, we'll be dotted along the shorelines, perched on windy cliffs or nested under a tree. Facilities available.
