Aloha artists, Aloha August!
The trade wind weather has been kind lately, brushing us ever so softly with just enough rain & gentle tropic breeze to soothe our senses & delight us with it's special magic. Hopefully these conditions will weave throughout August & September. I had the good fortune to attend the recent opening for the FRIDAY ART DAY GROUP at the PAHOA MUSEUM. It was simply wonderful! A fine tapestry of beautiful work by our friends & fellow artists! Please allow yourself the time to stop in & check it out. To hook up with the FRIDAY ART DAY GROUP check the "OTHER MUSINGS" section. Also of note are the ABSTRACT SHOW at the WAILOA ART CENTER & EHCC's group show with works by VIVIAN URSULA & FRIENDS.
You've probably noticed our blog has a new look. I wanted to recognize Mother Nature & her seasonal gift of these lovely long days, sunny conditions, gorgeous sunrises, & spectacular sunsets. 5- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK, Keaukaha – (AKA Leleiwi). Every first Thursday. Plenty of beautiful views, tide pools, sea grass, Honu, Nene, etc. An informal midday critique, bring any recent work, or work in progress, all mediums. Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, (before Richardson's) 5 pavilions in a row, orange life guard tower on the point. Parking & lua.
12- BEHIND BEN FRANKLIN, Hilo– At the backside of Ben Franklin parking lot, take the ramp to lower parking lot. Two old monkey pod trees lend shade & ambiance. Palm lined Hilo bay, historic Ponohawai St., an unexpected lotus pond, & a few mauka town views.
19- KUHIO KALANIANAOLE BEACH PARK, Keaukaha - Sail boats, beach cottages, reflecting tide pools, & occasionally a cruise liner slides by. Shady trees, parking, lua. Kalaniana’ole Ave., 1st left just past "The Ponds" restaurant, (formerly Harrington’s).
26- VENUTIA'S BAMBOO HALE, Peepeeko- Finally we return Venutia’s! Her beautiful bamboo home is in the gated community, just past the old sugar mill. It sits almost cliff-side. Fantastic views. From Hilo just between the 10 and 11 mile markers, turn makai at Sugar Mill Rd. (look for the large old mill cog), drive to gate. We need to enter as a group, not individually, so meet promptly at the gate at 8am, (we'll probably stand around for awhile & wait for stragglers, but don't bank on anything). If you're unable to make the 8am meeting time, call Leslie's cell in advance (prior to the 26th) to make arrangements. Views of rugged cliffs sheltered by ironwoods, & an ocean side pool w/ waterfall. Venutia asks (due to liability) that we refrain from swimming in the waterfall. JULY SCHEDULE, en plein aire
Aloha July, Aloha Artists!! July's here with all kinds of happenings, First Friday events, & the action at Kalani Resort. July is a wonderful time of year, with it's warmth, & the occasional "unexpected" storms that dance through here. It makes for some good painting weather, so set aside some time for a session or two. Loads of beautiful views, tide pools, sea grass, honu, Nene, etc. Informal midday critique for bring recent work, or any other project you might like feedback on. 8- ALA HEIAU– Ocean side location, at the bottom of Maku'u Rd in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Follow Maku'u to Ala Heiau Rd. (4miles), turn right. Drive to the end & park (allow access for the fishermen’s trucks). Vistas of coast, tidepools, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully shaded cliffs. A Crowd Favorite.
15- CARLSMITH BEACH PARK, aka 4 MILE - Keaukaha.. NOT really 4 miles from anything in particular, but it's real pretty there.. Large sweeping trees, rolling lawns, enclosed bay. Infamous for it's Honu population, but we love it for it's lovely views. Kalainana’ole Ave, Keaukaha to Carlsmith Beach Park, makai side, across from Seaside Restaurant. Bathrooms, parking.
22- LAUPAHOEHOE POINT- Rugged cliffs w/pounding surf, incredibly beautiful & often windy, but always gorgeous. Pali views both ways along the coast. From Hilo towards Honokaa, turn makai on Laupahoehoe Point Road (just past 27 mile marker).. pavilions, lua, parking
29- COCONUT ISLAND/MOKU OLA- A small island accessed by a foot bridge, it is encircled by turquoise waters. The views across the bay are captivating, & it is common to see boats, ships, & canoe action all through the bay. Across from Lili’uokalani Gardens, we set up in the parking lot, on the island or anywhere around there that strikes you.

JUNE EN PLEIN AIRE SCHEDULE
JUNE SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE
Sorry kids that this sched. wasn't posted eariler in the month-- I was touring Europe. I thought my iphone could substitute for a laptop, but it could not. When this month's schedule came out, I was in Austria with plenty WIFI connection. However when I logged on to my little Plein Air Blog, it was all written in German! A language I do not read or speak, but I pressed on, thinking I could figure my way through, just from familiarity.. but I was very wrong. The air messages were stern & persistent enough that I finally backed off, (step away from the itsy-tiny-iphone-sized-German-language-computer-air-messages). I just returned home last night 6/17, so here I sit, posting an ever so late June Schedule. However, I did have a fantastic time in the old country... just have a few glitches to work out with the touring/blogging thing.... And NOW.. ta da!
THE SCHEDULE- every Thursday, 8am or so, no fees, no rules-
3- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK– (formerly Leleiwi), we are here every first Thursday of each month. Tide pools, sea grass, shade trees, honu, endless sky & across the bay views. An informal non-mandatory midday critique (work in progress or current work). Kalaniana'ole Ave., just before Richardson's in Keaukaha-5 pavilions in a row, life guard tower, restrooms, parking.
10- KOLEKOLE BEACH PARK- Hamakua coast, turn off from the Hwy just North of Honomu Town exit. We'll be at the beach park. River meets ocean, small waterfall, bridge trestle, beach, lawns, coconut trees, rugged coast view (bring mosquito repellent). Covered pavilion & lua
17- BAYFRONT CANOE LANDING-Hilo Bay at canoe HALAU. Easy access, lots of parking, and bay views of Hilo, the shoreline, Mauna Kea, splashes of color from the canoes. Kamehameha Ave., enter beach park parking lot across from the old Iron Works bldg. Look for group.
24- 17 MILE MARKER KAMA'ILI - located on Red Road at Kama'ili.. A favorite spot, fondly called Arthur's Office. From Pahoa by-pass head past Pahoa High school towards Kalapana, follow the road when it curves down to Kaimu (makai). Turn left at the junction, follow coast road down towards Kapoho, pass Kalani Resort to 17 Mile marker. A little by-pass created to move the road away from the eroding cliff. A sweet slice of classic Hawaii.

May Schedule/en plein aire
EN PLEIN AIRE
Aloha May artists! Happy cinco de Mayo! This time of year brings varying weather conditions here in Hawai'i, sometimes switching from one extreme to another rather quickly. I find it all very beautiful. I suppose you all know by now that I'm a big fan of our rain, ka ua. Yes yes, let it rain to fill the rivers, feed the plants, & softly rinse away all our dust & worries.. Blessings from the sky. In the middle of May, I jet into the wilds, joining up with local artists Peggy Stanton & Rod Cameron, et al, for a European Artist Escape...The journey begins with a week in Prague, Czech Republic & from there we are free to roam. By all accounts, CR is an impressive land of rolling countrysides, ancient villages, & abundant rivers crested with story book bridges. Another enormous attribute is the extraordinary amount of castles, which apparently don't harbor dragons anymore. I'll let you know. We will be painting all throughout, so I'll be posting paintings at some point. Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha, just before Richardson's. 5 round pavilions in a row, life guard tower on the point. Plenty parking & lua.
13- ALA HEIAU – Favorite & easy, at the bottom of Maku'u, in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Take Maku'u makai to Ala Heiau Rd, turn right. Drive to the end & park (leave access for fishermen’s trucks). Unmatched vistas of Puna coast, tidepools, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully shaded cliffs.
20- CARLSMITH BEACH PARK (aka 4 Mile) Keaukaha. A beautiful park location, palms, tide pools, life guard tower. Nice little cove. Kalainana’ole Rd. to Carlsmith Beach Park, across from the Seaside Restaurant & lagoon. Lua, parking.
27- WAI'PIO VALLEY – Always STUPENDOUS. Meet at the lookout early, & try to carpool if possible. If you get there & no one's about, we're probably already in the valley-usually by the river. Hamakua Hwy. north to Honoka’a, follow signs to Waipi'o. 4 Wheel drive required, or you can stay up top & paint the long view. Lua in valley, & public bathroom up top. Bring water.

13- ALA HEIAU – Favorite & easy, at the bottom of Maku'u, in Hawaiian Paradise Park. Take Maku'u makai to Ala Heiau Rd, turn right. Drive to the end & park (leave access for fishermen’s trucks). Unmatched vistas of Puna coast, tidepools, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully shaded cliffs.
20- CARLSMITH BEACH PARK (aka 4 Mile) Keaukaha. A beautiful park location, palms, tide pools, life guard tower. Nice little cove. Kalainana’ole Rd. to Carlsmith Beach Park, across from the Seaside Restaurant & lagoon. Lua, parking.
27- WAI'PIO VALLEY – Always STUPENDOUS. Meet at the lookout early, & try to carpool if possible. If you get there & no one's about, we're probably already in the valley-usually by the river. Hamakua Hwy. north to Honoka’a, follow signs to Waipi'o. 4 Wheel drive required, or you can stay up top & paint the long view. Lua in valley, & public bathroom up top. Bring water.

APRIL SCHEDULE
APRIL SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE- 8am - pau, no membership, free
1 st- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK (a.k.a.Lele'iwi) Keaukaha, Every first Thursday is at this same beautiful spot. Many views; colorful tide pools, sea grass, various shoreline trees, across the bay vistas, forever sky, sea turtles, Nene, whales, Hawaii at it's best. Cool swimming if you're so inclined. An informal-not-so-mandatory-midday-critique @ noon-ish. Bring your work, (in progress or fresh) for lively feedback. Kalaniana'ole Ave. thru Keaukaha, makai side, 5 pavilions in a row, parking, & lua. Just before Richardson's. Painters set up in various locations thru out.
8 th- WAILOA ART CENTER, Wailoa Park, Hilo/Merrie Monarch week. For 3 years now our group has taken the opportunity to participate in the Annual Merrie Monarch festivities en plein aire style. We set up at or near the Wailoa Art Center. The sheltered courtyard can be a nice spot, especially if it's raining. The Hawaiian Quilt Show is hanging in the main Gallery. This may encourage foot traffic, so keep that in mind. Lovely expanses of lawn, languid waterways, shady trees, arched bridges, all gently framed by mountain & ocean. Gallery director Codie King graciously allows use of the restrooms. From Kamehameha Ave head mauka on Pauahi Street one block, turn left onto the Piopio Street park entrance, head to the round 2 storey bldg. Signs on Pauahi St., plenty parking & shade.
15th- SADDLE ROAD- Kilohana Hunter’s check-in station, btwn the 43& 44 mile markers. A bit of a long drive from Hilo, but very worth it. Carpooling is recommended. GLORIOUS in the brisk spring air, sweeping views of the three beauties Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai. Wildflowers, & extraordinary atmosphere. Saddle Rd to the Kilohana station near the 43.5 mile marker (from Hilo). It's clearly marked. Turn mauka onto the dirt road. Painters will be up the road, we could be tucked, keep your eyes open. I think cells work, (Amy-989-6906) Saddle Rd is newly paved & smooth from Hilo. The dirt road is minors (no 4 WD needed). Portable lua, not well tended (a little rough).
22nd-KING'S LANDING/LEHIA/PU'UMAILE - Different names for the same spot. A quiet location, off the usual track. The furthest out of the Hilo beach parks, at the end of Kalaniana'ole, proceed past Richardson's & through the open gates, down the dirt road, we'll be towards the end, ocean-side. Not far. Many pathways, tidepools, unobstructed Hilo Bay views, & lively surf. Monk seals & pua'a have visited us in the past. This spot is a crowd favorite. Easy set up in the shade of the ironwood trees. Ample parking, portable lua
29th- THE ISLE'S – Makai of Liliuokalani Park, behind Nihon Japanese Restaurant. Great views across the bay to town, the canoe landing, bay shoreline, and Hamakua. If we're lucky Mauna Kea will be out flaunting her stuff. Nice lawns, tide pools, boaters, fisherpeople. Easy parking, picnic tables under the trees. Lua avail. From Kamehameha Ave., turn makai on Lihiwai Street (towards Suisan), pass by Suisan, pass Banyan Drive, the road stops to become one way, turn makai into the parking area.
