JANUARY Schedule 2010/en plein aire

Hello Plein Air artists, WELCOME TO 2010! Below is the schedule for January. I’m sending this schedule out a little earlier than usual as I’m heading to America later today.

Plein Air Artists of Hawaii Island (aka PAAOHI) meets informally each Thursday morning approx. 8am – noon, but come when you can, some artists stay all day. PAAOHI has no fees, instruction or rules other than you need to be creating art (& keep chatter away from the non-chatters--they’ll tell you who they are). It's a real treat when new artists join us, or when artists we haven't seen for awhile reappear. If you know anyone who'd like to participate, invite them show up any Thursday, pass their email on to me (leslie@lesismore.us) & I'll send them the schedule or direct them to view the schedule on our BLOG http://www.paaohi.blogspot.com/.

The "Other Musings" section at the lower part of this email is a bulletin-board style networking source; a forum for readers to learn about upcoming shows, workshops, island wide plein air groups, etc. I'll post art-related items submitted to me via email prior to the 25th of the month.

ALOHA JANUARY!!!!
JANUARY SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE

7- WAI'ULI- Wai'uli Beach Park, Hilo – (formerly Leleiwi). Our standing location for first Thursdays for its beauty & easy access. There are lots of different views from Wai'uli; tide pools with beautiful colors, sea grass, and the occasional turtle or flock of Nene. It is always a pleasure to paint here. We gather for an informal midday critique, so bring old or current work if you’d like feedback. On Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha. Drive the beach road until you come to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. There are 2 parking areas and sets of pavilions, we usually set up in pavilions near the lifeguard stand. Lots of parking and restrooms.

14- Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Park. One of Hilo’s newest parks, it offers lovely harbor and Ice Pond views with boats to challenge those of us who fear structures. Picnic benches, ironwoods for shade, plenty parking, porta lua. On Kalaniana’ole, turn left into the parking lot just past Ponds (formerly Harrington’s). The park has a sign visible from the street.

21- Kaloli Point/Paradise Park- Rugged cliffs with pounding surf and maybe a whale? Turn onto Paradise Drive, from the Kea'au-Pahoa Hwy. Drive all the way to Ala Kai Rd. (the the little road just makai of Beach Rd.) Curve left onto Ala Kai Rd and follow all the way down until the pavement ends. We will be located in the beach side turn off just after the pavement ends. It is a clearing in the ironwood trees generally used by fisherpeople. No facilities but artist Lynn lives just across the street. Lynn, can we use your bathroom?

28- Onomea Bay Lookout- Head North up the Hamakua/Belt/Mamaloha Hwy from Hilo town and take the scenic route turnoff to Onomea Bay, makai (towards the beach). Drive the old winding road (aka "Scenic Route") until you come to the lookout, just before the Botanical Gardens. It is about 3 miles from the Belt Hwy. You won't miss us, we’ll be set up right on the road. This road is what is known as a loop, and after much winding it ends up back on the highway (if you are coming from the north, you can access the "scenic route" from the Hamakua side as well). There's beach access via a footpath down to the shore, approx. a 10 minute walk. A rather beautiful jaunt, but you keep in mind that it's a downhill grade, which means it’s uphill on the way back! Spectacular views, gentle beach, and beautiful footpath are just some of the inspirational sights at the Onomea lookout. No facilities but Toulouse Gallery is just down the road, maybe can descend on Diane.
