2012!JANUARY..en plein aire

E komo mai, January! Aloha Artists! Well, I was hoping that since we aren't experiencing "el nino" or "la nina" weather patterns, we'd somehow be vog free this January, but my hopes are officially dashed. High pressure weather systems that bear down just north of Kauai and create the unfortunate Kona (or south) Winds are in motion. This means Vog for much of the islands, especially Hilo being up close & personal to Madame Pele. Anyhow, we'll make do as they say. We've some great locations lined up, & we'll see how it goes. It's always a fantastic thing to be in the field & painting with fellow artists. Perhaps to make up for the junk weather we'll see some frolicking whales......!

SCHEDULE-

ALOHA JANUARY!!!!
JANUARY SCHEDULE, EN PLEIN AIRE

5- WAI'ULI- Wai'uli Beach Park, Keaukaha, Hilo, (aka.Leleiwi). O On Kalaniana'ole Ave. in Keaukaha. Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Wai'uli Beach Park, just before Richardson's. Parking, pavilions, bathrooms, & water.

12-ISSAC HALE BEACH PARK / Pohoiki, PUNA – We got rained out here last month, so here’s a retry. A couple of us painted in spite of the rain, and it’s a truly magnificent spot. Between Kapoho and Kalapana, this recently developed beach park as pavilions, great luas, a huge parking area, and best yet – GORGEOUS views from multiple vantage points. All the amenities make it a little crowded in summer, but at this time of year it’s perfect for painting. And maybe we’ll see whales! Head for Pahoa, then take 132 toward Kapoho. Just past the Lava Tree park, the road forks, take the right fork, which is the Pahoa-Pohoiki Rd. Enjoy the beautiful mango tree tunnel (and watch for speeding surfers).

19- HAKALAU VALLEY – Loads of river, ocean, & valley views... spectacular! Nice lawn, picnic tables, parking, easy set up. From Hilo, take Hwy. 19 to Hakalau (immediately past Honomu) turn makai on the old Mamalahoa Hwy. Follow the road down the hill to the valley (approx. 1mile). The Road splits at the valley floor. One choice is the north side of the river, the other choice is the Hilo side. To get to the Hilo side of the river you use the small bridge that the River is flowing over... it's not that scary, the water is usually only a few inches deep. Never cross if the water looks angry or heavy... But then you know that :) No drinking water, bring your own. Porta Luas.

26- BABY BEACH-, Keaukaha, – A Hilo beach park that’s off the beaten path... Head down Kalaniana'ole Ave turn left on Onekahakaha Rd. Make a quick left onto Apapane Rd, then right on Lihikai Rd. At the end of the road, park and walk down to a lovely, protected beach with swimming, trees, lava framed pools and Mauna Kea across the bay. A lovely new spot for us! No facilities – walk to Onekahakaha for restrooms.
