SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE/EN PLEIN AIRE

Aloha September, Aloha artists..
There's wonderful art events slated for Sept. Hilo's ARTHUR JOHNSEN GALLERY is celebrating their 5 yr. anniversary with a First Friday celebration. Congratulations to Arthur & all the exceptional AJ Gallery artists. And EHCC's First Friday opening of MALAMA AINA-ARTISTS IN CONSERVATION will be an exciting event. The 11 local artists featured, also dedicate their time in conserving & protecting the fragile Hawaiian flora & fauna. Their passion for ecological conservation is beautifully reflected in their art. Volcano Art Gallery will host Emerging Artists, opening Sept. 18th, 5-7pm. Artist Joe R. Hampton is having an opening at Idspace Gallery in Kurtistown, Sept. 19th, 2pm-5pm Get the full scoops by going to www.HIartsmagazine.com or 9668943.

Follow the signs that read LAVA TUBE (Thurston Lava Tube). Before you come to the "Lava Tube", makai side (right) you'll notice a turn off with lots of parking, this is Kilauea Iki. Pull into this lot, this is Kilauea Iki. Keep in mind that there'll be plenty tourists. Kilauea Iki is a stunning crater, with crater black smooth pahoehoe, venting plume, lushly verdant steep sides, & breath taking vantages. Best in the morning, come early! If it's cloudy we'll move to a better location...
16– BABY BEACH, Keaukaha- A beach park that’s off the beaten path. Kalaniana'ole Ave, turn left on Onekahakaha Rd. Make a quick left onto Apapane Rd, then right on Lihikai Rd. At the road’s end park, walk down to a lovely, protected beach with swimming, trees, lava framed pools and Mauna Kea across the bay. A new spot for us! No facilities – walk to Onekahakaha for restrooms.
23- 17 MILE MARKER, Kama'ili, Red Road- This location usually features the Ocean Entry of the lava, with dramatic plume & coast. From Pahoa, Hwy 130 in Pahoa- past Pahoa high school traveling the Pahoa/Kalapana Hwy. Follow to the Kaimu/Kapoho turn down, makai side. At the lower makai junction turn left, towards Kapoho. You are now on the Red Road. Follow along the coast to the 17 mile marker. The road has been moved a bit back from the crumbling cliff. The artists usually perch in the shade trees along the edge of the old road, just above the ocean. A sweet slice of classic Hawaii.
30- RADIO BAY/BREAKWATER- Keaukaha-boats, ships, canoes, across the bay views, rocky shoreline, at the base of the Hilo Bay breakwater wall. Kalaniana'ole Ave., drive past the Hilo Port entrance, turn at the next left, just before the 2 large white tent structures.
