March/en plein aire schedule

Aloha March! A season of not-so-surprising blustery days, swirling winds and soothing rain. When vibrant weather is included in a painting it creates ambiance, atmosphere, and mood. Weather can also add action and interest into a study. Feburary was the second month we had a Sunday morning en plein aire session, and it was great. The slow pace of Sunday morning Hilo provided open sidewalks, and an absence of parked cars. Free of the familiar downtown rattle and roll, we felt an unusual calm to the clean little streets. Rose Barber's 'Long Pose Figure Workshops' at her Paradise Park "Muse Studio" are happening. A model is set up "ala" a different master artist each month, utilizing palette, lighting, model type, props and other considerations associated with the featured artist. The last 3 sessions have showcased Sergeant, Caravaggio, and Gauguin. March's featured master artist is Klimt. Check out details in the "Other Musings" section below. Have a beautiful month!

*3/5-WAI'ULI BEACH PARK- Keaukaha, just before Richardson's Beach Park, 5 round pavilions in a row, orange life guard tower on the point, turquoise ponds, makai side, large parking area. Non stop views, quisessential Big Island. Free swimming included.
*3/12-KAMA'ILI BEACH HOUSE-Red Road location. Private home, lovely lanai overlooking spectacular Puna coastline & view of seaside vent. Little cottages sprinkled throughout the property, a fun day for all. We often end up enjoying a picnic lunch and digging this lovely comfortable cliff house. Located on the red road between Opihikao and Kehena.. take the Pahoa-Kalapana Hwy to the Kaimu turn off. At the bottom of the road there's a right or left choice, go left towards Kapoho. The house is 1/8 mile past the 17 mile marker, just after a big blind curve on the makai side, large green gates, cement posts & a For Sale sign roadside. Long curving driveway...a real jewel. *3/19-OLD PEOPLE'S PARK/SUISAN-Directly behind Suisan Fish Market, large old Monkeypod tree. Views of Hilo Bay, the "isles" and the small boat harbor. Quiet and sweet.
*3/26-LEHIA PARK/PU'UMAILE/KING'S LANDING- Known by any of these names depending on who you're talking to, but now officially known by it's original name, Lehia. At the end of Kalaniana'ole Street (Keaukaha), go past Richardson's (Wai'uli) Beach Park, and proceed thru the open gates. The pavement ends, but the dirt road isn't so bad, and we won't be that far in. Port-a-potties. A very shady area with many interesting views of coast line, hidden tide pools, and lovely small beaches.
*3/29- KALAKAUA PARK -Sunday! Across EHCC building, magnificent banyan tree, Federal Bldg, Hawaiian Tel Bldg, EHCC, old Hilo Hotel...

**ALOHA LUIGI's.. I recently proposed an exciting and fun idea to the owner of "Aloha Luigi's". An art show that depicts the many aspects & views of the small downtown eatery. Drawings, paintings, or your medium of choice. Subject can be the building, it's environment, or even a portrait of the owner, employees or patrons. Works that follow these
guides will be considered for the show. The show is scheduled to be hung at Aloha Luigi's about 6 months from now. - write me with any questions you may have.. there is no prospectus.

February Schedule

Kung Hee Fat Choy!! Aloha Year of The Ox. February hosts Fat Tuesday (AKA Mardi Gras 2/24), and sweet old Valentine's Day (2/14)-looks like quiet little February has a full dance card. The weather is very changeable and there is always a strong chance of storms..

Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa have their own style of high drama. As they silently sit shrouded beneath a cloudy veil it's possible to forget they're even there. That's when the clouds slip away, and like burlesque dancers who've suddenly dropped their fans, the girls are blushingly revealed. Show stopping winter wear brilliantly glistens in an elegant drape across dark blue curves. Gentle little clouds creep up to quietly curl and tuck cat-like around the lower slopes. Later you'll see them gliding smoothly away, undulating across the sky like Isadora Duncan's scarves in slow motion.

What to do if you show up to a location and no one's there? I scout around checking views, sky conditions, fuss with my gear, clean my palette, & set up. Occasionally I'll sit in my car waiting for Gerald or someone. If you're uncomfortable starting alone, buddy up and car pool. Plein air artists must be self starters, you know-it's all about "capturing the light". This schedule provides location suggestions and ideas, ultimately it's up to you to choose how you'd like to work it. The group of "regulars" is widely varied, and it's our collective good fortune to have such exquisite locations at the tip of our brushes.

5- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK. At Keaukaha, follow Kalaniana'ole Hwy to just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side, 5 round pavilions in a row, life guard tower on the point.

12- ALA HEIAU. A simply gorgeous Puna location. At the end of Maku'u drive to the bottom, right on to Ala Heiau Road. Drive to the end and find a place to park, being aware not to block the small dirt roads the fisherpeople use. Great views of coastline.

19- GALLERY TOULOUSE. Onomea.. Diane Renchler's sweet little gallery is always a treat to invade.. if the solar power is up for it she'll blast jazz, and good vibrations waft about. Good ol' Toulouse (the cat) usually does a disappearing act or peers out from a tree covered rooftop. Quaint old style structures, ocean views, and country side...

From Hilo take the Hamakua Hwy (19) to the "Scenic Drive"/Mamalahoa Road, turn makai, Gallery Toulouse is about 1.5 miles down the hill, right side. Small sign, gotta keep your eyes peeled.. 9643507

26- WAILOA PARK. I'll say let's meet at the big pavilion, but we'll probably be out in the park, spread all over hill and dale. A group favorite,, diverse and Hilo style..

**DOWNTOWN HILO SUNDAY SESSION-2/22/09- The corners of Mamo and Keawe. Im going to paint the building that houses KaHuina Gallery, but there are many aspects to that location, and if the Mamo building is still standing we can paint that too.

January 2009 (wow!) Hau'oli Makahiki Hou..!
January is often visited by Kona Winds (S S/E)- and they tend to push vog to the windward side, which sometimes creates difficult conditions for en plein aire. Remember to keep your sense of flexibility open. We've escaped up to the top of Saddle on a vogged out thursday more than once- to paint en plein aire sans en vog aire. Rain can be another factor at this time of year.. and again Saddle Road is a handy escape route. Another escape route when there's too much rain is Kalapana. It lies just south enough to grab the sometimes illusive sunshine. Im looking forward to another year of painting in our magnificent outside studio here on the island of Hawai'i!!

January 1- Wai'uli Beach Park-Keaukaha, just before Richardson's Beach Park, makai side
January 8-Opihikao Red Road by pass- From the Pahoa-Kalapana Hwy. turn left onto Kama'ili Road (aka Opihikao Road), follow the winding road slowly to the bottom (approx. 4 miles), turn left at the stop sign. Appox. 1/4 mile down the road you'll see a by-pass makai side, actually we like it just a bit past the new by pass. Just look for the painters. Beautiful cliffs, Beautiful trees, Beautiful Puna.
January 15-Honomu Town- It was cooking along the roadside in Honomu the last time we were there, so perhaps this time of year will be more hospitable. Bob Weiss's house will be available and has many great views too..last time we were in Honomu, some artists found a spot under a large old tree had a great vantage and shade too..
January 22-Laupahoehoe Beach Park-Hamakua Hwy north, around the second gulch, you'll see a sign makai side "Laupahoehoe Point", take that road down to the point/beach park. Spectacular and always just a bit different..
January 29-The Isles- Just across from Liliuokalani Park, and behind Nihon restaurant "The Isles" is a favorite of fisher-people and picnic eaters..and now artists! We love this place 'cuz of it's great views.. across the bay to town, the canoe landings, the harbor activities, Mauna Kea and Hamakua too..
..and our first Sunday morning session will be:
January 25-Keawe Street, across from Luigi's- we'll set up on the sidewalk about 8 am, and attempt to bust down a painting or two. I've been loving the colors of Luigi's new paint job, so I thought we'd begin this downtown Hilo series from here....

DECEMBER SCHEDULE/ en plein aire

Soft gentle December.. the end of the year, a month of pa'ina & family festivities. At this time of year everyone seriously gets their busy on, so the painting locations will be some old Hilo faves. I'm hoping that this'll help you jive your holiday hustle with the plein air schedule. November was quite the month! Traveling PAPOH artists were on island for a week long paint out, Wailoa Center & EHCC both opened major exhibits, and there was plenty of partying about town! Mahalo nui loa to everyone who came to Wai'uli to celebrate our 2 year anniversary (11/06). I was very touched by the very thoughtful aloha- cards, gifts, and hugs! I started writing this monthly schedule as a way to fulfill a longtime desire to paint en plein air. The evolution and success of this group is due to artist participation- so mahalo nui loa to everyone who hooks up with us to make art on Thursdays! The other day I was speaking with Patti Pease Johnson about painting structures, buildings, ect., and we had an idea. Starting in January, on the last Sunday of each month, there'll be an additional plein air session held at various locations around downtown Hilo. We chose Sunday because foot and road traffic are both low. Watch for the first session in the January schedule. Thanksgiving Day at the bottom of Haili Street was fun! Six artists showed up and we could really branch out as it was very mellow in town. I took notice of all the lovely plantings, lively architecture and interesting colors of downtown. I suppose it takes a slow day to provide an opportunity to really sit back and observe what's there. Our future Sunday excursions should be fun..

11- Onekahakaha Beach Park- Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Onekahakaha Beach Park. It is not roadside, but there are signs on the makai side of Kalaniana'ole to guide you. Once your at the park we'll be at the far left oceanside pavilion. We recently ended up there (when we got rained out of Hilo Yacht Club), and we were completely impressed.
18- Wailoa Art Center- Located in the center of Hilo town, amidst the verdant rolling lawns, languid coconut trees, the wonderful Wailoa River and ponds that gently reflect it all. This spot has the added bonus of the Wailoa Center's lanai in case of passing showers...
25-Mele Kalikimaka! You're on your own. Mostly everyone has an agenda for the day.. but it's good to note that there's plenty of uncrowded parks and beaches on Xmas. Let your imagination steer you..
