ALOHA AUGUST, ALOHA ARTISTS!
Here it is August already (& the rain is still falling!).. aw well--it is hurricane season, so I do keep in mind that a little rain is much better than a hurricane! Well, Im not quite sure of the schedule yet, but as soon as it's sent to me I'll publish it. I do know that this Thursday we'll be at good ol' Wai'uli Beach park.... be there or be square.. It'll be beautiful and we are fortunate to have those great sturdy pavilions to shelter us in these quickly changing weather patterns.... just another something to consider when you paint outside. Anyhow, show up this Thursday for our usual monthly kickoff and enjoy the beauty of squalls pushing across the sky, and the mystery of the windward side's illusive sunshine blessing us with warmth as we watch in rain in town.......
AUGUST SCHEDULE- meet time is 8am, but show up when you can, we usually are there for most of the day-- no rules, except to respect the other painters space...
2) WAI'ULI BEACH PARK- Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave to Wai'uli Beach Park- located just before Richardson's, makai side, lg parking area, pavilions. Forever views, and all kinds of sea action. We meet here Every First Thursday of every month. Facilities.
9) BABY BEACH-Keokea Point, Keaukaha, Kalaniana'ole Ave. to Onekahakaha Rd. turn makai, turn left immediately onto Apapane Rd. to Lihikai, turn right.. go to the end, drive through the gate. Great location. No facilities, bring your own water.
16)THE ISLES- Hilo- Liliuokalani Park area- Behind Nihon Restaurant- At Suisan, turn makai onto Lihiwai Rd. go to the one way, then turn left into the parking area. We are usually by the portable lua. Water available.

30) HAKALAU VALLEY BEACH PARK- Hamakua- From Hilo, Hwy 19 to Hakalau. Just past Honomu, Turn makai on Mamalohoa Hwy. Follow road down.. the road splits at valley bottom, you can go north vallery side or cross the river (it's usually safe) & go the other side. Most of us paint on the side you have to cross over to. Either way, it's lovely. River & ocean views. Facilities.

JULY en PLEIN AIRE SCHEDULE
ALOHA ARTISTS, ALOHA JULY! This is the month of celebrating independence and the welcoming of Hurricane season. While many call this time of year "summer", it can be very wet and not at all very summery. Here in Hawai'i is still the wet season, things will start to dry out around August/September, so we should make note of this weather as outside painters. Keep your raingear handy, we still have some precipitation ahead. Paintings will be full of tonal ambiance to encompass all the lovely moments of the frisky sky action. This month we have mostly Hilo locations, and right at the month's end we hit Ala Heiau, at the shoreline in Paradise Park Puna. Back in the day, Hawaiian Paradise Park was part of the enormous Shipman Ranch which extended from about Fern Forest subdivision in Upper Puna, to the shores of Mid Puna, bordering Hawaiian Homelands at Maku'u. At some point in the early 1960's this large swatch of land was subdivided and sold as 1-3 acres lots.
SCHEDULE- 8am start, come prepared. I always advise to bring your own water.
5- WAI'ULI BEACH PARK/Leleiwi, Keaukaha, Hilo- Located just before Richardson's Beach Park, it is distinguished by the 5 oceanside Pavilions, large parking areas, and beautiful views. Water and bathrooms available.
12-KUHIO KALANIANA'OLE BEACH PARK, Keaukaha, Hilo- Kalaniana'ole Ave to the first park just past The Ponds Restaurant. Pretty ocean views across Reeds Bay of private boats, and ancient old palms. Water, and lua.
19-LILIUOKALANI PARK/Hilo, This beautiful Japanese style park, with wandering paths, well-kept ponds, gorgeous ocean views is postcard perfect. The land was donated by Queen Liliuokalani with the agreement that it would become a Japanese Style park. Her legacy lives on. Large green-ways, Tori Gates, red pavilions, a curved Moon Bridge, and lots of smaller bridges are placed along glistening ponds shaded by great old trees punctuated by moss covered pagodas. An artists feast for sure.
26-ALA HEIAU, Puna, Paradise Park- Take Maku'u all the way to the ocean (approx 4 miles), turn right at the bottom, Ala Heiau Road. Drive to the end, taking care to not block the fisherman access,
a small little opening loosely defined as a 'road'. One of favorite spots due to the spectacular views and wonderful ocean breezes. Don't miss this spot.

JUNE SCHEDULE/en plein aire
Aloha Artists, Aloha June!
Here's June with it's lovely long balmy days, & it's warm sappy sunsets. It's always a benefit to outside painters to have nice long days-- all the more time to bust out some paintings. This group has been going strong for almost 5years now. If you haven't had a chance to participate, or haven't shown up in a long while, I think it's time to take the time. The 'rules' are simple, just grab your supplies & show up. It is said that it's a 8am start time, but realistically, everyone just rolls up to the site when they can. The only real rule is to not be disruptive to the other painters. Respect the space and energy that is happening as you arrive. Do not roll up to a paint site with friends or whoever and proceed to stand around and visit. Thursday Paint day is all about painting, not really so much about anything else. Anyhow here's locations for June, enjoy!
JUNE SCHEDULE- every Thursday, 8am, bring your own stuff
7-WAI'ULI/KEAUKAHA/Kalaniana'ole Ave. -- every First Thursday-- non-stop beauty, everyone knows how to find us..facilities and fresh water & swimming too..
14-AMAU'ULU/HILO/ private property of Julianna Ziegler- Wainaku Ave to Amau'ulu Rd. Turn Mauka, up about 4.3 miles.. way above Hilo. You will come to an open gate, pass through, at the first gate on left turn in. Two large grey houses and ample parking. Loads of barnyard animals, quaint stream, and long views of Big Island countryside. Covered areas in case of rain. Thanks so much Julianna!
21-KA'IE'IE ROAD/PAPA'IKOU- Hamakua Hwy to Kaieie rd. on the Mauka side. Private Property owned by Tammy Stellanova. Turn up, follow along for about 3/4 mile, turn at beige water tank on left side- it is an unmarked old rd.. follow along, you will come to a smaller road/drive with a or nge house in view. This is Tammy's place. Follow thru to the house, but please don't show up before 8am, this is a private residence. Mahalo, Tammy!
28-BREAKWATER/RADIO BAY/HILO-Kalaniana'ole Ave to just past the GasCo. & Aloha Petro. a small beach access rd. Turn makai, follow down. Lots of views, some quiet spots, and some wild ocean action. Facilities, no fresh water.

MARCH en PLEIN AIRE
Aloha March, aloha artists! As I sit writing this, a hard rain is falling from a sky of solid grey. I can barely see across Hilo Bay. We've certainly gotten a lion's share of precipitation since January. This is wonderful for the aina, but not so wonderful for artists. We're hoping for a slice of sunshine at least on Thursday. As for our regular Thursday painting sessions, feel free to show up when it works best for you. When you get to the location, remember that artists must be self starters, so set-up where you have a great vantage and get into it. Amazingly artists will magically appear, - like mushrooms. 8am is the start time, but often times no one shows up til 10 or so. The start time depends on location, weather, and other random and undetermined variables.

FEBURARY en PLEIN AIRE SCHEDULE
ALOHA ARTISTS, ALOHA FEBRUARY! Well, better late than never-- sorry 'bout the delay.
Anyhow, Feb. should bring us better weather as our beautiful trades ease their way back.
Well it's a "short" month... so we'll make the best of it.
FEB. SCHEDULE--
2/WAI'ULI/Keauakaha, Hilo- Kalaniana'ole Ave.--just before Richardson's Beach Park. Pavilions, Beautiful Views, facilities available.
9/"WAIAKEA PUBLIC FISHING AREA", HILO. - Not really a crowd favorite, but nice if you've never painted there. The old purple building does have it's charm, and moments of pretty reflections in foreground pond. Mostly everyone will probably move around the pond or over to the area with the boats instead. We've all painted the building a number of times.
16/CARLSMITH BEACH PARK/KEAUKAHA, Hilo- Kalaniana'ole Ave.--also known as "4 Mile". It's not 4 miles from anything I can figure out, so it's must be called that for a reason unbeknownst to me. Lovely ponds, ocean, whales, great shady trees.. fab. across the bay views. Located a mile before Richardson's, w/ facilities available.
23/Toulouce Gallery/Onomea/North of Hilo, take the "4 mile scenic Route" on old Mamalohoa Hwy. about 2 or 3 miles makai to Gallery Touloce. It's a vintage plantation building, the color of dijon mustard... Look for sweet signage and purple trim... park on the grass please.. Great long views, a fun time always. Charming old buildings & large old trees.
