OCTOBER SCHEDULE/EN PLEIN AIRE

OCTOBER ALOHA- Here we are on the edge of the so-called "holiday season"... hmmm.. To some this may mean increased sales, cooler days in the studio, or global tripping. It's all good. I'm looking forward to painting shape shifting clouds, and illusive sunlight. I'm anticipating the return of the whales, monk seals & big surf. I dig the coolness of this time of year & the how the trades generously scent the air with ocean, and brush my skin & hair with soft spray. A simply splendid occurrence. The calendar, like a genial old sage, presents us with expectations & innuendo firmly rooted in historical weather patterns. Pretty much a guessing game, may as well listen to TV weather forecasters. So apparently, remaining cheerily flexible is our optimum path. You know what I mean; the lemons to lemonade thing, the go-with-the-flow-keep-a-smile-on-your-mug routine, 'jus hang loose (a'ole pilikila). 1)WAI'ULI BEACH PARK- Keaukaha- Something new! Our monthly Wai'uli Thursday experience will now include a non-mandatory gentle critique. It'll most likely coincide with lunch
time. Bring any of your art, it doesn't have to be a plein air work. A critique can really expedite problem solving in a positive & supportive manner. It's a good opportunity to
gather input & support from a diverse, experienced, & talented group of artists. Wai'uli has beauty from here to forever, but it seems of value to expand our focus a tad. Many
artists have a stash of "mostly finished" paintings hanging around their studios. Wai'uli Thursday is a perfect time to haul them out into the light of day & get busy. Bring along your
initial sketches & photos for referencing. In any case, whether you're starting something new, or finishing up something unfinished, the beautiful natural light & group critique are
positive steps. Critique participation is voluntary. Wai'uli is still located on Kalaniana'ole Ave. just before Richardson's, 5 round pavilions in a row, orange life guard tower on point, public lua, parking, tide pools, bay views, endless sky, magnificent ocean & good fun.

15)KUHIO KALANIANA'OLE PARK-Keaukaha- Kalaniana'ole Ave., our newest park is beautiful & comfortable. The group recently painted there, & it was superb.. let's try it again.
22)BOILING POTS-Piihonua- We've never painted here before. Often raining & very beautiful. Plenty views from the lookout, or ease on down to the to the riverside & paint the famous "boiling pots" up close & personal. Parking & lua available. If it's pouring rain we'll go to Onekahakaha instead.
29)17 MILE MARKER KAMA'ILI-Red Road-A top 5 fave spot. From the Pahoa/Kalapana Hwy. to Kaimu. At the junction turn left, towards Kapoho. You are now on the Red Road. Follow along the coast to the 17 mile marker. The road has been moved a bit back from the crumbling cliff,& that's where we'll be--perched on the edge of the old road, just above the ocean. It is a beautiful beautiful slice classic Hawaii. Last time I painted here the plumes were two!! (dual pipes)....Never can tell what's gunna happen in Puna...

September Schedule/en plein aire

ALOHA SEPTEMBER!! As our weather eases into a slightly drier phase, we can look forward to some lovely en plein aire sessions. Hopefully all hurricanes, tropical storms & their depressions will remain off shore, blessing us instead with humidity, still winds, uncomfortable heat & perhaps nice surf. September is a lovely time, school's back in session, there's less rain & the days seem to stretch quite slowly into evening. If you've never come out to paint with the group, September is the time to do just that. Many artists simply capture their desired composition with a camera, then return to the comfort of their studio for the painting. I really love a studio; calm, quiet, clean, no weather problems, no noisy intruders. However- it's marvelous to be in the elements, brush in hand, fellow artists nearby, nature in every breath. Invigorating and stimulating, en plein aire is a unique & gratifying art experience. My mentor encourages an en plein aire field study, with pics & thumbnail sketches. Later back at the studio, by referencing your field painting, notes, sketches & pics- the work can be fully realized. These steps have noticably changed me as an artist. I embrace the methodology & attention to detail that en plein aire requires-- no easy thing for this free flying hippie. Contrary to my experiences in abstract, plein aire paintings don't just casually fly out of the end of the brush. It is a different sort of mystery tour, but no less magical. The Sunday Session at the end of each month is great. A more casual gathering, we rarely get there at 8am, & the entire session is mellowier. Monday morning artist Jerome Sasaki is still painting around Hilo. He welcomes all to join him (8960107). It's real nice to have a Monday as an alternative (or addition) to Thursday!! The Aloha Luigi Show intake will be on September 8th, at Aloha Luigi's. I'll send out a "broadcast email" with the details as soon as they take shape.

10)-KOLEKOLE BEACH PARK/HONOMU TOWN- In the morning we'll paint @ Kolekole Beach Park, after lunch, or later on..we'll move to Honomu town. It has been my experience that Honomu town is absolutely scorching in the morning sun! I'm hoping in the afternoon we can get some cool shade somewhere.
17)-MAKU'U POINT- ALA HEIAU- At the bottom of Maku'u in Paradise Park, Puna. Drive to the bottom of Maku'u Rd, turn right on Ala Heiau Rd, drive to the end. Park so as not to block the fishermen or any driveways. Absolutely Gorgeous..
24)-CARLSMITH BEACH PARK- Keaukaha. Kalainanaole Rd. to Carlsmith Beach Park. Has a sign. Beautiful park, bathrooms, swimming, big trees, magic ponds, and life guard tower.
27)-RAINBOW FALLS-Sunday Session. Up Waianuenue Ave. in Hilo, follow the signs. Just below the hospital, just above Carvalho Park. Sometimes loads of tourists. We will have to deal.

AUGUST ALOHA! August is the middle of Dry Season, but it's also Hurricane Season... so there ya go, something new- unpredictable weather! August wears the colors of a ripening mango, sunset skies occasionally streaked with unlikely purples or lime green. Our recent July "full moon paint out" was fun, and the last revelers packed it in somewhere around 10:30pm. The moon never really showed face, but moonlight lit up the starry starry night, impressively glistening across the bay & pouring softly over the twinkling lights of Hilo. We all tried our hand at the nocturne thing & vowed to re-schedule again.
Another reminder is needed in reference to loud chatter at painting sites. Seems there's a whole lotta talkin going on! Remember- if you're taking a break, don't cruise in the center of the scene chatting it up. The causal atmosphere of the Plein Air group can erroneously be mistaken for a social event. But keep in mind that many artists have only that day to paint & everyone should be able to work without humbug. There's a fine line between quiet art conversation, & irritating blah blah blah solving the problems of the world stuff. Please do not bring along non-artists, and keep your visiting considerate. The Aloha Luigi Show is slated for September, so it's time to start putting your ideas on a support. Rally a group of painting friends & show up for a Sunday session. Sit inside the shop during the week & do some sketches, or photograph your set ups & take it to the studio. The show dates are firmed up (intake is 9/08). Sunday is a perfect time to paint exterior scenes, town is slow, the shop is closed & the back parking lot is at our disposal. There's coverage, shady trees, & plenty of charm. Perhaps it's time to get in touch with your inner "Vincent Van Gogh" & paint the restaurant in it's daily life, patrons and all. Up to you. (see OTHER MUSINGS section for more info.) 13-RED ROAD/ KAMA'ILI- From the Pahoa-Kalapana Hwy. turn left onto Kama'ili Road (aka Opihikao Road), follow the winding road slowly to the bottom (approx. 4 miles), turn left at the stop sign (RED ROAD). Appox. 1/4 mile down, you'll come to a by-pass- we'll be just a bit past that new by pass by. Just look for the painters on the beautiful cliffs, under the beautiful trees right there in beautiful Puna.
20-BEN FRANKLIN- at the backside of the Ben Franklin Store pkg lot is a ramp to enter a lower parking area. Go to the lower area, we will be stationed under the huge old banyan behind BF store. Views of Hilo Bayfront, the flowering shower trees & coco's that line the road, a lotus pond, and great views of Ponohawai street too..
27-WAIPIO- we meet at the look out, paint & then head down valley... hook up with a friend that has that 4 wheeling feelin & come on down....It's always a luscious day.
30-HOME STREET BANK- SUNDAY MORNING SESSION- Off of Aupuni st. in the Gov't section of Hilo town, makai side of CRUISIN COFFEE, is a non-descript bldg. called HOME STREET BANK, drive directly behind it, I'll be there painting the most beautiful purple reflections shimmering across the ponds.. The reflection falls from the crazy purple bldg. that sits under that huge ancient banyan on Kilauea Ave.

July Schedule

July!
Languid long warm days slippin' so easily into soft evenings that you barely notice 'til it's dark. July is often associated with beach bonfires, swimming after dusk, and wonderful fresh fruit, all potential paintings. This monthly schedule is developed with variation in mind, a bit of here & there, this & that. Location options are often an ongoing dialog between myself & participating artists. If you have anything to share on possible locations- write or call me. It seems that rescheduling spots in a loosely rotating style is a favored concept. I was once requested to eliminate our monthly first thursday at Wai'uli. I asked around & learned that the majority look forward to it- so it remains. When "new" sites are rotated in, I listen for feedback. Im always scouting from Ka'u to Waipio to Saddle Road. This coming February (2010), I'll schedule a session in Waimea to catch the cherry blossoms. I like to stretch my comfort zone & paint stuff Im not so familiar with. I like diversity...painting landscape in one sitting, perhaps a quaint structure next. Recently Hilo artist Lynn Nakkim wrote that some artists don't like to hele on to Puna or "out of town". In response they set up an alternative site at Keaukaha's Richardson's beach park. So if you feel the need to be in town--you can hook up with Lynn guys at Richardson's! In addition, Jerome Sasaki & Gerald Murai have been painting on Monday & Tues. mornings around Hilo at easy-to-get-to spots..call Jerome to connect (896-0107).

16-WAILOA SMALL BOAT HARBOR- mauka side of the bridge, down by the boats. I tend to grab a shady tree in the nearby Wailoa park, up to you.
23-KUHIO KALANIANA'OLE PARK- Just past the ice pond in Keaukaha, off of Kalanianaole Road, makai side.. across the inlet from Reed's Bay.
30-SUISAN/BAYFRONT CANOE LANDING SIDE (across river mouth), parking lot, public bathrooms. Great different views of the docked boats, Suisan & Hilo Bay

June Schedule

JUNE! oh Beautiful June gives us soft warm days & sunsets that glow all the way to Hilo. Schools are out & the occasional tourist or two will be tripping around the forests & shorelines. Plein air "start time" is 8 am, but remember this is "Hawaiian time", meaning that anytime is good, show up when you can. Artists have shown up mid morning, or even in the afternoon. What's important is that you create the time and space to do your thing. Keep in mind the 2.5 hour frame of light. I generally take a "mid-day-sun-directly-overhead" break. I kick back, spread out a picnic cloth & kau kau. I reflect on my morning paintings, watch the clouds......

June 11-ALA HEIAU- At the bottom of Maku'u Rd in Paradise Park. Follow Maku'u to Ala Heiau Rd, turn right. Drive to the end & park (leave access for the fishermen trucks) Fabulous vistas of coast, wind whipped trees, & rowdy surf from the safety of wonderfully shaded cliffs.
June 18-SCENIC LOOKOUT/HILO BAY- A roadside turnout- between Honoli'i & Wailuku River, under the shade of a giant monkeypod tree. Views of Hilo Bay from Hamakua side. I think in the afternoon, we should move to the "Old Peoples Park" for the opposing view. That spot is located just directly behind Suisan, on the opposite side of the bay, under another wide old monkeypod... also has a beautiful blooming Jacaranda...looking lavender.....
June 25-WOOD VALLEY TEMPLE- The first Tibetan lama I ever sat in the presence of was Nechung Rimpoche (1973). He was the most beautiful glowing guy I have ever met in my entire life. He later founded Wood Valley Temple. The Wood Valley Temple & visitor center have gorgeous gardens, & colorful sculptural buildings graced by stately peacocks. A gently flowing vibe of positive energy silently weaves throughout the pathways, in and out of doors & windows- & like a inviting aroma, it surrounds and calms all. **From Hilo: South on Highway 11, 51 miles to Pahala (1 hr. 15 min.), aft the 51-m.marker, tn Right into Pahala, go to the stop sign at Pikake St. Turn Right. Pikake takes you to the edge of town, continue straight up the road about 5 miles (gradual uphill past orchards, pastures,bridges) until you come to the forest. At the forest, follow the paved road Left. The temple is the first building on your Right marked by colorful prayer flags. Park at Visitor Parking and check in at the Main Temple.

**ALOHA LUIGI's.. Hopefully everyone has something cooked up for these upcoming shows. This is an opportunity to show your work in a popular downtown locale. The concept is to feature the aspects, views, or impressions of ALOHA LUIGI'S. Subject can be the building, it's environment, portrait of owner, employees or patrons. All works that follow these guides will be considered for the show, drawings, paintings, or your medium of choice. The show is scheduled to be hung at Aloha Luigi's about 4 months from now (Sept) It is a one month show. Ricky Ryken will have the "floor" for Oct. Write me with questions (if you have) other related concepts will be entertained. In addition another show is slated at Luigi's for Nov-Dec. featuring (but not limited to) plein aire work. May Schedule/en plein aire

Aloha May..! We've heard the poem celebrating "May Flowers" & everyone loves "Lei Day", so maybe it's not too bizarre to expect a bit of sunshine to bust out long enough to encourage fresh blooms & some humming bee action. Lately rain seems to be the predominant theme. In any case, it's best to keep our brushes moving in a space of creativity. Recently I've noticed an abundance of art opportunities around our fair island. Whether you working in a group, independently, or prepping for a show/exhibition, workshops to hone your skills & opportunities to expand yourself & your muse abound. When working en plein aire It's important to be a self starter, know your focus, and to keep it simple. If you don't enjoy working solo, grab a friend and set up together. When working in a group be considerate of other artists, keep a respectful distance, refrain from constant chatter, and don't bring along non-artists. Painting sessions aren't picnics- there's Artists at Work! The "keeping it simple" means carrying enough supplies to do your thing, but not to be burdened like a pack animal (it's a fine line). When artists set up & get to work, something happens, a shift. If you check it out- you'll easily notice the vibe of creativity. The mood is content and charged at the same time, a very amazing environment indeed. I feel so fortunate to work along side of each and everyone of you who have shown up and made it happen... Mahalo nui loa! You'll notice that this month's locations are all about Beach Parks. The reason is simple, come June school is out, visitors are abundant and the beach parks will become very lively. This is a chance to paint at these comfy locales before they get all fired up with the summer scene. Carpe Diem!

May 21-RICHARDSON'S BEACH PARK- Keaukaha/Last park on Kalaniana'ole Street, blk sand beach, beauty and gentle trees.. a wonderful spot.
May 28-CARLSMITH BEACH PARK- Keaukaha- A.K.A. "4 MILE" (once the site of a Carlsmith family home lost in a tsunami), beautiful vantages
* SUNDAY May 31- PONAHAWAI STREET- on the lawn above the Tesoro Gas Station, under the coconut trees. Old style structures!!
